I was wondering what people are using for recording their music? I'm interested in computer based recording equipment but don't know a thing about it.

Thanks,
Ed

I was looking more for hardware rather than software but thanks for the comments. I'm not looking to spend a fortune since this is just a hobby for me but I don't want to waste my money on crap either. Just looking for what others have had experience with and can recommend.

I just got a Zoom H1, which is a self contained recorder with an XY mic configuration. It comes highly rated. I've only used it a couple of times, but the recordings are nice quality. Zoom makes other recorders that record multiple tracks. The H1 is basically their entry level recorder.

I suggest that you research different recorders, then go to YouTube to listen to the reviews and recordings of the specific recorders that you end up considering. Zoom, Tascom, Yamaha, make nice recorders. After listening to sound samples on YouTube, the Zoom recorders appealed to me the most.

I am using a focusrite interface. It has excellent preamps and a good headphone amp. great for a single person recording 1 or 2 tracks at a time.

For software I use Reaper. It's free although I gave them a donation as I think it is great. Fully featured, runs all plugins, full automation, everything you will find in pro tools basically

I use a m-track device http://www.m-audio.com/products/view/m-track. It has inputs and gain controls for guitar and microphones including phantom power. It is connected with USB and shows up as both a record and playback device.

For recording
Like Al Paul says it can get expensive.

So lets make it easier
For simple recording
Hand help units like Zoom tascam all work well and are ok for personal uses but it depends on your expectations it is contained and you can switch out mics on most of them. They can range from under $100 on up

Studio
again we have practice recording requirement to CD quality.
Here I have a rack mounted system that used 2 mixing boards
Both Markie One has an effects loop in it the other doesn't. So when I record using the boards I have to mix the guitars in and use the one board for using mics on the amps and acoustic and voice run through the other one, This gives me 36 inputs.
I can then choose to run this through my Gemini recorder on the rack or if I want to do CD quality I can run through the Cake walk software on the computer.

So decide what your recording goals are first. Simplicity , or more professional. You can spend from $100 to $10,000
Learning to use recording software has a learning curve but can be worth the effort
Al Paul does recording more than I do and will recommend his advice over mine.
