Down here where I live the word Luan doesn't refer (not to be confused with reefer Kevin) to a species of wood but is a generic term for any thin plywood usually consisting of only three plys and is commonly used in cheaply made hollow doors for the inside of a house but is also used in many other applications.

Okay tommy, everybody is striking out, perhaps it's time for a hint like exotic or domestic or some other subtle hint, huh, huh what you think?

OK, the contest has ended so I'll give a hint just for the heck of it.
Dan was REAL close with his Catalpa guess. These two are similar in appearance
but the wood in question is an Asian import and quite invasive.
One of the main uses for the mystery wood is outdoor furniture.
