Rosewood back and Sides and a Mahogany Soundboard

Post by Guitar Hack »

I was wondering if anyone has ever heard a guitar with rosewood back and sides and a mahogany soundboard? I have never seen one and wondered what one would sound like.

Pros....correct me if I am wrong, but you will more than likely have to make a thinner soundboard than you would have in spruce. Mahogany is going to be heavier, which might result in a higher, maybe anemic sound. Many of the guitars that used a hardwood for tops had thinner soundboards, which makes it critical that it be defect free and as quartersawn as possible. I have been thinking about making an all zebrawood soundbox...it is so unique looking, especially with the way I build them, I think it would be very cool, just not sure of the sound.

So, my big brother was playing guitar and I figured I'd try it too.

Hog topped guitars sound fine. Different than spruce, but nice. I don't think the parts in question here would result in a greatly different sound than an all mahogany Martin.
