Anyone made their own bandsaw?

This is a very tempting project. Has anyone tried it?

And this too - does not look that difficult:

Eh.. im not sure the amount of work and time you would put into that bandsaw would be worth the effort. I can't imagine you could get decent blade tension on that.

Same thought here. A lot of tension would be required for the band saw so I'd be concerned of that.

The drum sander, on the other hand, with some modifications would certainly have some potential and might be worth investigating further. I have built a small scale thickness sander for my model building and it worked out great.

This particular bandsaw has been used by a luthier for quite a while. I'm not saying it could not be improved, but it does an excellent job and holds up well with a minimum of fuss. Here is a vid of the luthier/builder of the sander:

If you can think of any good mods please share!

I'll tell you right now - I'm not going to build it. I asked if anyone else had :-)

For the sander I wonder how much re-engineering would be required to make it a self-feeding sander??? As it is (though definitely useable) you have to constantly hold the piece of wood as its going through the sander (pushing it actually), then you have to reach across the unit to remove it from the other side which in itself can cause some problems in the sanding process not to mention safety issues imho. I don't know what would be involved but I suspect it wouldn't take much to do that.

One other upgrade to a unit like that which I think might be nice is some kind of built in thickness gauge.
