John,
Is there a way we can record this and make it available for those who can't make the live chat?

This is really exciting John, great idea. It would be cool to have this as a regular gig, once a month or every other month have a high dollar guitar building type guru that we can interrogate... I mean ask questions of on open forum.

I'd like to get Dave's input on the basic tools and how they're used for inlay. Perhaps Dremel vs. Foredom, types of bits, bases, fretsaws and where they can be obtained at good prices. Dave may want to offer for sale, to our members, some sort of 'Starter Kit' for rookie inlayers and/or something for the more accomplished inlayer. I think an expert would be more inclined to appear in a Q & A or video lesson with us if there was a potential source of income for him.

1) How does he hold and mark his inlays (pencil, scratch awl, etc.)

2) On fine detail, how does he decide if he will try to leave wood or remove wood and fill (for example, the slots on a slotted diamonds/squares......do you route a square and fill the slot or do you try to leave a fine bit of wood that mostly fills the slot)

3) On a 45 style inlay that outlines the fretboard, when and how do you mark the fretboard inlay? (does the final neck set occur, then mark and inlay, then finish?......how do you mark the fretboard perimeter? Does the finish change the fretboard location much so it covers the inlay or worse has a gap between inlay and fretboard? Are future neck resets a problem?)

4) How does he set the bit depth? Does he leave the pearl slightly proud, flat, or slightly recessed and sand down to the inlay?

5) Does he use magnification while inlaying? If so what does he use? What kind of lighting?

great questions.
I know he uses the inlay tool we have as he and I worked on this together . The air tools work faster 56,000 rpm
thanks
