Feeling a bit under the weather, so I stayed home today. Gave me a chance to at last post pictures of my first guitar. Thanks to Bill and all of the great people on this site whose contributions were invaluable to me.

I 'think' I've figured it out. Let's see...
(edited by BillC .. we'll have to "go there" to see these; they're behind a firewall.)

Well, at least they're up there. Not sure why they are so large or what to do about it. Ignore the dates on the photos; took them all this morning. ALso, guess I should have dusted the guitar before taking the photos!

Ed -- the problem is that when a website hosts an image, they are using proprietary software that runs behind firewalls and will not let anyone else grab them. The photos must be in a regular directory soemwhere on the internet. I will convert your listing to show the URLS.

I would host photos, but I'm already paying for extra space for this forum and don't have room to host pix.

Ed -- Okay -- the photos DO NOT load in SAFARI, but they DO LOAD in Explorer, Netscape, and Firefox. So if you're using Safari, just use a different browser.

Dang internet anyway!

Bill

Oh == ED, that looks GREAT! the finish is really nice; is it the TruOil and French Polish Tom Lang was talking about? Good job!

Thanks for trying, Bill! Any suggestions from anyone on a site to use as a host that will work in this case?

Ejko, I have had very good luck with Photobucket.com. It is free (you have to put up with the banners), automatically resizes the pics for easy and correct posting to a forum, minor editing (rotate and resize) and (so far) has worked good.

One of the things that I really like is they offer the link complete with the required to make them appear in a forum thread - you can just highlight the URL and paste it into your discussion. You can also send people your Photobucket site (without the logon) so they can look at your pics without actually e-mailing them.

Yours aren't loading for me in IE. Get something working here, I want to see your git!

Touchdown!!! Photobucket made it a snap.

Bill, the back and sides are Tru-Oil. I tried the french polish on the top, but wasn't happy with the results so I removed it and used about 5 coats of Deft gloss lacquer from a spray can.

As all of you cautioned me, it's not perfect, but I'm very pleased with the results... and it rings like a bell!

Once again, thanks to all for your advice and support along the journey (including getting these darn photos to display)!

Ed, I was going to say "really good trick on how that neck binding and rosette change with the angle in those last pics" LOL

Seriously, it looks really nice - the neck joint looks really clean and what I can see thru the sound hole does too. Does it play well? Are you happy with the whole experience? What is next?

Thanks to all of you for the kind comments.

I used the standard Martin OM bracing pattern, and hand scalloped the braces to the point an untrained ear like mine could tap the top and hear it sustain the 'ping'. The guitar really does sound nice; the sustain is incredible!

One unusual thing I did was to make the lower bout 1/2" less across than on a typical OM. I usually play sitting down, and like the feel of a Martin 00 I own, so I tried to get a bit closer to it. Probably not as big a deal as I thought; not sure I'd do it again, but no regrets.

Tom Lang was invaluable in his guidance on using TruOil (see the Finishing Your Guitar' section). For a first timer like me, it is simple and provides a really nice finished product. I used various grades of micromesh to polish each coat; another great product.

The experience was really fulfilling. There's something neat about tackling a project you don't think you can do and then seeing it come to fruition. This probably sounds crazy to some, but I enjoyed the building process as much as playing guitar!

I thought I was lined up with a 000 12-fret kit for my next, but it sold before I could jump on it. It's either a 12 fret or a short scale 000 for the next. The wife's pushing me to remodel a bathroom, so the timing for my next may not be what I'd prefer. On the other hand, I don't want to let too much time pass so that the hard learned lessons aren't lost. I captured them in writing as I went along (thanks, Bill!), but I think the actual memory may have the greater value.

Regards,

Ed
