Do I have enough time?

Hello everyone, this is my first post acutally I made this account to ask this question! I'm leaving for college in 6 weeks to the day I'm sure ill be home on weekends and stuff to work on it. The problem is that I really want to make my own guitar, but I don't know if i'll have enough time. How long did it take you all to build your first guitars? Keep in mind that I have no woodworking experience, but my dad's in construction and I have plenty of tools around. I just don't want to spend $500 on a kit and have it sitting half finished for a year.

Welcome to the forum.
I think folks around here say that it takes about 100 hours to make one. I didn't time my first, but I started around Xmas day and had it done, including finishing about March 1. I didn't work every day on it, but spent a good many evenings and some work on weekends too.

Honestly, I think your frame is workable.

I started building with no tools or experience what so ever, and a limited amount of tools at my disposal from family and what not. I got a stewmac kit which shortcuts around alot of needed tools, and I got to it. I'm 20 years old, and probably guessing your about the same.

6 weeks of dedicated time could make some serious progress, and if your going to be home on weeks, that's more than enough time to have a competed guitar in a couple or a few months. When I built my stewmac there was alot of time that I had spent waiting for tools and what not, and just some time where I was unmotivated or discouraged by something where I wouldn't touch it for a couple weeks at at time. It took about 4-5 months to string up, and that was extremely undedicated time. I honestly believe you'd have no problem getting it finished in a reasonable amount of time if you try.

I usually dedicate a couple of months of evening work to building the basic guitar, then 6 weeks more for the finishing (about 2 to actually apply it, then setting and buffing time). Many guitar building classes are a week long (up to the finish stage) so if you want to more or less work non stop you can easily do it in your allocated time. Remember, however, rushing often results in mistakes.

Remember too, that along with the $500 for the kit and related stuff (finish, mold making supplies, etc) you can easily put 500 into tools that the average shop doesn't have (small router, special bits, fret files, nut files, clamps and clamps and clamps).

Download the SM instructions (free pdf) and spend some time going thru the build threads at this forum. If you type my name (Freeman) in the search box you see the early ones that I built (and my minimum home shop).

Good luck with it, it is a very rewarding experience (and my first one is still my daily player)

It takes me a minimum of 5 months start to string up!
But that is just me.

My opinion only, but if you are wanting to do a first class build and want a great sounding guitar, you will need to build several jigs, possibly buy some specialty tools that your dad likely doesn't have, and need to do a lot of reading. Doing that, I doubt 6 weeks will be enough time. If you can live with some flaws and are more interested in an assembly project, you can probably pull it off.

I'm going to be the spoiler and restate my previous post. If you totally have your act together, have all the right tools when you start and work deligently you have time.

If you have to stop mid build and order a bridge pin reamer or ask some questions, or heaven help, redo something, then you are pushing it badly.

There is nothing wrong with waiting, building in stages, taking your time and savoring the experience., making something that you are really proud of.

just my $0.02

If you are not working, 6 weeks is doable. I did mine in about 7 but o have a 3 year old and no shop. All hand tools and I had to clean up each nite like I wasn't there because I built I built it in my living room. I worked on it only at night and a little on weekends. Check my blog:
Tonysbigbuild.blogspot.com for details. I had a KMG success kit so I built a mold too. And took a vacation during the build. Finishing does take a while, but the building part is totally doable.
Go for it.

I don't believe you can build on in 6 weeks as your first one unless like freeman had said you have to be well prepared for it. But you can definitely do a pretty big dent in progress in 6 weeks. And every week while your at school is when you could wait for materials/tools or what ever, and work on it on the weekends, no doubt in my mind your time frame is workable.

If you consider majority of the guys on this forum have pretty busy schedules, having 2 free days a week for some of them is unheard of, which is why some of the really long build times that people have mentioned, but like I said, I think your set, and I'd give it a try. Coming from someone in almost the exact situation as your in, I say do it.

Dan...if you didnt have a job, how fast could you build a guitar?
I did mine is about 7 weeks with only hand tools and a trim router. I think he can do it problem is, if its not already ordered, he has less than 6 weeks already!

Thank you all. I just wanted to post back so you know im acutally reading your comments! My kit should acutally arrive within the next few hours according to fedex tracking?! I did want to do this for the experience of seeing whats put into the guitars I play everyday. My goal is to be done by the end of Christmas break this year(5-6 months). Plus the kit will give me an excuse to come home on the weekends lol. I'm already learing too! A 2x4 isn't 2x4 at all... my Dad had a good laugh about that. Back to home depot!
