Need advice on positioning fretboard inlay pieces

I'm installing some MOP rectangular inlay on my 2nd build and need advice on a good way to position each of the pieces.
I've marked the dead center of the f/b. Then I marked the dead center between frets in each location.
I can sight each piece pretty good, but was wondering what others did to make sure they are correctly set.
Also, another question, is Weld-On 16 a good glue to use to spot glue the piece as I mark the outline with an Xacto knife? I don't want to just hold them there with my finger because I'm prone to slipping.
Seems that's what Larry Robinson used in his DVD's.
Thanks,
Bob

Wish I could help you Bob.......but you'll have to wait on others advise.

Where did you get the Larry Robinson DVDs?

Bob, I have done a fair amount of this. Using a .03mm pencil, I draw a line down the center parallel to fret and another perpendicular to the frets. If I am inlaying diamonds, this gives me reference line for each point. If I were doing squares, I would probably add another line or two to give me a good reference.

I use the tiniest drop of thin CA to hold the piece in place while I trace with my .03 pencil. To remove, I pop off with a razor blade or xacto blade.

Adaboy, at this site: http://smartflix.com/
Look under the Lutherie section. It's a rental place.

Ken, if I also put crosshairs on each piece, it should make it almost fool proof.
That sound right?

Yep! Are the inlays the big Gibson style?

I just finished a Les Paul block in lay. The way I laid it out as described , Find the center of the fretboard from nut to the end .then center on the frets. Once you center and square up the block I use the .3MM pencil to trace out. Check out this video . It will show you layout and filling techniques.

They way I do it is, I box up the fingerboard and take it to UPS. Then, I mail it to Dave Nichols and he does the inlays for me. Then it shows up on my doorstep like magic about a week later with the inlays done perfectly.
Try my technique. Its practically foolproof. And I should know!! I have been a fool for over 35 years!!

Tony -WIMP!! :)
I've been trying to answer Ken's question for 3 days. I guess they were having some server problems that appear to be fixed.
I've done web pages before - it takes a lot of effort, so thanks all who work on this one for the hard job that they are doing well.
The inlay for this one is smaller than the Gibsons. For the 1st fret, the piece is about 5/16" by 1".
The web site is Custom Luthier. Modern Full Block with split 12th fret. Just follow the links to fingerboard inlays, block inlays, etc.
For some reason, putting a link on here isn't working for me.

Although the people on this sight do wonderful inlay work, you can't go wrong with sending your work north to Malone for Dave, Keif or Tracy to inlay. These guys are all top artists in the field and do unbelievable work. I have spent many days in Dave's shop, and his knowledge base is far beyond a normal human. I often wonder what planet he is from. His fuel is Glen Levitt, which to normal humans would kill brain cells, but in Dave's case it works......

I set the pieces with Weld-On 16 last night, and will let them set until today.
Then I will scribe around the edges with an Exacto Knife. I tried one last night, after it had set for about 4 hours, and it didn't slip until I was making my final edge scribe. Whew!
I'll elaborate on this when I put it on my build thread, but all the pieces were 1" long. I set the first 3, then layed a straightedge down the fretboard at the edges of those 3. Then measured the distance from the center and found it was right on. That eliminated the left to right part of it. Eyeball and centerlines eliminated the up and down issues.
If I can cut worth a darn with a Dremel, the inlay should look pretty cool.
Thanks all for your input on this.

Bob,

I still think thin CA is a better choice. I put a drop of thin CA on something like plastic. I then dip a toothpick in the CA and touch the inlay piece. A very small drop will hold a piece in place for tracing while still being easy to pop off. The benefit of CA compared to your weld-on is that the piece is fixed almost instantly so you can trace and begin your routing immediately.

I tried that Ken, and like you, that's the glue choice I wanted. But I'm not steady enough with my hands, I guess, and can't get it located quickly enough before the CA takes hold.
The Weld-On worked as long as I didn't press too hard when scribing. I did get a couple of oops though. Carrying the blade too long on a couple of lines. But they aren't very deep, and should be sanded down enough to go away.
Gulp!
