Has anyone else had this happen??

On two guitars I've made with nito lacquer finish, when I've intalled the bolt on neck for the first time after polishing out the finish, the lacquer "shatters" for lack of a better term, on the body where the edge of the heel cheeks contact it. I did not even fully tighten the bolts. It is not extreme, and I can sand out, and repolish this area, but was just wondering.........
is this a common thing that happens?
One thing I realize I did NOT do was clean up that cheek surface after the finishing process.......so, possibly there is a small area that is not flat/smooth that is pressing unevenly in that spot and causing the crushing of the finish???

Yep -- common problem, some builder's including yours truly actually machine a counter bore 1/16" slightly bigger then the washer -- looks cool and eliminates this issue. I have described the process on this forum, might show up in a search.

Hey Ken,
Are you talking about on the heel block inside the body? It sounds like it, but I don't see how that would help this issue??
Can you explain further?
Thanks, I appreciate your input.

Tuning machine washers ---- neck block --- no that's not the thread or post.

The concept is the same as a step drill one size hole for the tuner and another 1/16" deep counter bore for the washer.

Clamp a board to the drill press table, drill the tuner holes 10mm leave the board in place, stick a 10mm pin in the hole, get a bottom cutting end mill the the same size or a little larger than the washer. Chuck it in and set the depth so it will go 1/16 deep in the head stock. Place the headsock on the pin, the end mill will be centered and will cut the 1/16 counter bore. If the washer turns it will only chip the finish in the pocket that is created.

Umm Ken, I'm not talking about the headstock and tuning machines. But I do understand what you are talking about.

Hi Kevin,
Sorry not sure where my head was -- been dealing with power outages here in Litchfield rushing to get things done while having electricity -- not good.

Anyway -- not to alarm, but this "could" be a bigger issue. If I recall you do/have used 5 minute epoxy under (Deft?) nitro lacquer -- one of real big problems with using any sort of epoxy under nitro is the chemical "bonding/etching" component --- if that does not happens the top coat finish is not unified but is laying on top of the base products and can/does chip off -- sometimes in small sheets.

Ken,
I hear you. I did use epoxy to pore fill, but I did sand back to the wood, so it is only in the pores, not a coating on the wood. I never liked that idea. I suppose it could still chip off over a pore thought huh? I have done the same on my other guitars too. Now, that said, the first guitar I made, when I refinished it, I had this "shattering" of the finish, but on the second one it didn't happen. I figure it may have something to do with an uneven heel cheek surface contacting the body finish, or, maybe even the other way around. Flat to flat should cause no problem. Flat to irregular could, I see cause the problem. Sound reasonable?

Kevin do you undercut the heel checks so that only about 1/8" or so makes contact with the body?

HI Bob,
Yes, I do, and thanks for mentioning this. I have been cutting that in on my table saw as I cut the tenon area. As I've looked at the area again with the neck removed, the contact was not even though. The finish area on the body "should" be flat, so I will lightly strip sand the cheeks with the neck setting in place, and clean up the surface a bit. I'll resand and polish the body where the contact is, and I bet I will get less of this marking, and hopefully no "shattering" will happen again.

I am betting that is what happened, Kev. I have done that too, and it was caused by uneven contact surface between the cheeks and the body of the guitar.

You guys have been where I've not yet been so I'll ask this question for clarity.

Shouldn't one always "strip sand" the cheeks of the neck to fit the body perfectly irregardless if it's a dovetail or a bolt-on neck? I was thinking this should always be done.

Adaboy,
I would say generally that sanding is done to get a correct fit, but not necessarily so. In this case, yes, before I applied the finish, the neck was fit to the body. What has happened is a small amount of lacquer, or perhaps some tape residue was on the cheek surface, and I "neglected" to clean it off before this dry run of attaching the neck. My oversight...not to be repeated I might say. There will be some contact marks in any case, left in the lacquer but that doesn't matter since the neck when installed is going to sit right there anyway.

Ken, I'm just about ready to start the Maca build.
