I have got to the stage where I am now starting to look at options for the finish to my first build and I have chosen french polish.

I have some Methylated spirit which I am told is suitable for french polishing and also verified by this excellent site.

My concern is that in England, I don't know about over there in the USA, it is coloured purple. Will the colour of the Methanol effect the colour of the finish? I am going to use blonde shellac and I obviouly don't want the soundboard to have a purple tint however slight that may be.

Paul, not to sound like a smartaleck, but you will want to test on scrap. That will tell you everything.

There is lots of great advice online, and the milburn tutorial is great, and i have used it myself, but, like wutzisname used to say, "trust but verify."

even in well-written tutorials, the text can't help but be imprecise. words like "good"..."suitable"...even, "brown" ... they can mean a veritable spectrum of things!

you definitely don't want to do ANYTHING to your top, or to any part of your guitar without doing it on scrap first. your testing will tell you if you want to then do it for real. work in a well ventilated area, and let us know how it turns out!

no matter what you still want to do tests, though.

Thanks Martin ... I dont think you are a smartaleck! more experience and worth listening to. I just thought that if anyone says wow ... hold your horses the colouring in that meths will stain then I am not even going to waste a mix of shellac.

Will mix up a pot tomorrow and test on a piece of spuce I have.

Thanks for the links.

When I first tried french polish (six months ago), I bought a nice bottle of everclear for about $18 USD. and I mixed a small jar of garnet shellac and another small jar of some blonde shellac, and I did some tests.

so now that I'm finally ready to do finish, my mixes are too old. so I've just thrown out about a third of that bottle! now that I've learned, I'm mixing about a half cup at a time, either 1lb or 2lb cut. I use only what I mix and it always stays fresh.

I did a test with that 6-month-old shellac, and it didn't harden. after 6 hours I could press my palm into it and then see my handprint.

just fyi...
