Nothing like the beauty of wood treated with tru-oil. To make that finish a little tougher, could one, after the oil is fully cured, wipe on some Polyurethane - or would that be an unsatisfactory coupling? So to speak..

FWIW -A wikipedia inquiry for 'Varnish' - which provides an excellent overview of finishes that Luthiers might use - has this to say:
'Polyurethane may also be applied over a straight oil finish, but because of the relatively slow curing time of oils, the emission of certain chemical byproducts, and the need for exposure to oxygen from the air, care must be taken that the oils are sufficiently cured to accept the polyurethane.'

Has anyone actually tried this, or should I just find a piece of scrap and experiment?

Another FWIW - I just checked the Minwax site forum with the same question, and their answer was, sure, you can put polyurethane over oil as long as the oil has dried very very well.

If this does work, it would give the beauty that only oil can give along with a tougher surface.
