Soon I'll be doing my first two boards, my twins don't ask story later. I was going over which crowning tool to get. I have been reading the forum and I know some make there own, I think bill had the bent dia. crowning tool and some guys like the cant three corner file. I just bought a nicolson very fine 6 in. three corner small file. but have'nt used it yet. Grinding the flat on the edge is easy for me I make custom cutting tools by hand for a living. what Do you guys favor I have'nt seen much writtenn about preference for crowning tools thanks Dave

Dave -- Like you said, I like the Stewmac diamond tool with the 300 grit and 150 grit. I also have Stewmac's straight fret crowning file, which has the radius for medium frets on one side and large frets on the other. I prefer the diamond one, but I still use them both at times.

For rounding the file ends, I like the little stewmac flat file.

I finish them off with 000 steel wool. some of the guys here wax their frets and fretboard; I never have tried that.

Bill

Thanks bill for resonding. I almost bought both of those, but on the trade secrets archive links, They say in dans shop the old three corner file is there favorite. It was 20.00 not 90.00 and you would think those guys would know also Frank Ford favorit was the cant file, I'm sure they all work, but Stewmac's thread on crowning was very good and worth reading for guys starting out like me. Hum... that cant file looks neat. Dave

The classic Gurian file holder with three burrs (Stew-Mac part #0685, $45.70) is still the workhorse here and in many other active shops. Does a quick, clean job of re-crowning without messing up the fingerboard. Replacement burrs are available, keeping the long-term cost low.

We follow up with 400-grit sandpaper on a small felt block, then up through 8000 micromesh. You can substitute 3M sanding sponges up through "ultrafine" but I still like micromesh. Finish with rouge on a hard buffing wheel. You end up with a jewelry-smooth finish.

A three-corner file with safe edges is probably the most common tool for rounding the ends of the frets but it's not the easiest (or best, in my opinion) for re-crowning.

Thanks Rick, I respect you from your words on neck relief,. Learned alot. I just might get that, The other two burrs for basses and banjo's might not get used much but who knowns? Also I really need to learn and use micro mesh. Rick is the neck on the guitar when you use the buffing wheel ? we use those for tool shanks. Thanks for info guys.

Thanks for the nice comments. I fret after attaching the neck so, yes, I buff with the neck attached. Scary. My wheel is mounted on a long 1/2" rod, put in the drill press, run at a slow speed, and with the table rotated out of the way. Even so, it's a bit of an issue to hold the guitar at the best angle without bumping it into the motor, support, etc. Once -- and only once! -- I tried buffing without completely removing the strings. Bad idea.

My wife, Cat Fox, has a nice little 6" fret buffing wheel mounted on a chunk of plywood with a small (1/8hp?) motor. Works well without the stress of doing it on the drill press. I really ought to walk across the shop and use it.
