Is there merit to this idea?

Some advice from another woodworker's site: he was testing Behlen's Rockhard on walnut panels.

First:" When oil is applied to walnut, it darkens and deepens it. The Rockhard by itself didn't penetrate deeply enough, even when thinned 1:1 with oil--that's why the left side (of the panel) is lighter. The center was sealed by the shellac so that no oil penetrated the wood at all, which is why it's lightest. On the right, the low-viscosity mineral oil penetrated fully, darkening the wood. Then the shellac sealed it, and finally the rockhard built up a deep finish. That's going to be the winner."

Second, some advice was given: "One thing you might try to fill the pores is to sand the oil into the surface. The oil and sawdust form a nice slurry that fills the pores and is a natural match to the surrounding wood. I've always used BLO or tung oil, so never tried it with mineral oil."

Is there any merit to pore filling in this manner? How would one go about it?

Dave -- This is a technique that is used with shellac also. Many luthiers have used it for a long time.

I think Robbie O'Brien's videos show this technique in detail. Search on YouTube for Robert O'Brien. His finishing DVD, available from LMII, also shows the technique (with shellac).

Thanks Bill, I will check out the Youtube.

Sanding it into the pores - well I guess I'll just have to see it done. Is that a method you or a majority of Forumer's (made that word up) use?

No -- in fact, I don't think anyone here has reported using it much. Maybe once or twice that I can remember in three years. I've tried it and didn't have much success. I've come to the concluion that I'm just not patient enough for the technique -- I can garantee that if you try to do it this way quickly, it won't work.

You've convinced me. There are plenty of other approaches.
Thx

I recently tried a similar method with egg whites on some EIR scrap and came to the same conclusion that Bill did: took a little too much time and i never really ended up with a pore-filled surface.

Egg whites? Were you making meringue? LOL Maybe you were not successful because you were supposed to use the yolks? LOL
I never heard of this method before. I wont be trying it, but it sounds interesting.

actually you do whisk it for a while... wife got really excited because i was 'making something in the kitchen'. :)

It sounded interesting to me too, maybe I'll try again, maybe not. Found it online - here's the general idea: Apply the egg white using 400 grit sand paper dipped in the egg white. Use a circular motion creating a slurry that packs the pores. Dry for a few hours, sand back with 320, repeat.

Classical builders use egg whites on their tops, too.

Dave - sorry to hijack the thread!

The protein chains that coagulate by whisking it solidify in the sawdust.....thats how it works. Very organic approach.

Hasn't egg whites been used for centuries to fill pores? (my understanding at least)

Dave, to your original post, I'm not sure I would want to use oil on the wood (to soak in and darken the wood) of an acoustic instrument as it would add extra weight which is typically not a good thing.

BTW, I meant to say above that some folks use Behlens RockHard Varnish (Al Carruth for instance.....and Lauren Brondel). But I'm not aware they use oil underneath to soak in the bare wood. Not a big deal for furniture but most wouldn't want the added weight for an acoustic instrument.
