I want to give Ken kudos for the kit and more importantly, for the great advice and hand-holding. I recommend him highly.
I had my share of problems, but what a great learning experience, and what a fine instrument I've ended up with! 00-14, Englemann/EI, ebony fb and bridge, and a lovely curly maple binding. I finished with rattle cans of Deft Sanding Sealer and Deft Satin Finish. It looks good enough to eat.
Speaking of binding - it turned out to be the easiest of steps, using Ken's latest generation channel cutting tool.
I'm in southern Oregon (Medford) so if you are in area, drop me a line!

Yup, lets see it!

Small bodied guitars are wonderful - I've built both 000 and 0 sized, plus several smaller 12 strings - and my next will probably be an 00 body, but I'll ladder brace it. I'd like to see just what you came up with - pics or info about the bracing, scale lenght, etc. I'm also very interested in how you would characterize the sound - some clips would great to hear.

Also, I am curious about your nomenclature - what does the "14" signify? Martin doesn't really make a 14 style (15 and 17 are hog topped, 18 of course is spruce over hog, 21 and up are spruce over rose...) Or are you refering to the number of frets clear (which would be interesting as all the double oughts I've ever seen are 12 fretters).

There was also a recent request for information and plans for 00 sized guitars - maybe you can help that person with info about yours.

The KMG 00-14 "Succes Kit" is an UPSCALE version of this instrument

I know Dave is in the process of getting some good pictures.

Oh --- and yes, the KMG "Success Kit" coding is body size and frets clear ---not trim level as with Martin. The KMG kits are custom ordered so materials, trim etc. are defined by the buyer.

My current digital camera has, like, 2 pixels. The box it came in says 2 megapixels but the pictures, well, I could probably do as well with an etch-a-sketch. :-)

Anyway, there is a good chance that, since I have been a nice boy (61 yrs old) all year, Santa is bringing an actually useful camera and if so I will put up some pics.

Ken, thanks again for the timely advice and encouragement. People should know that I was brought up in a household where there were two (2) tools for any and all purposes - a ball peen hammer that lost its head on the upstroke, and a kitchen knife that served as a screw driver and was also used to cut balsa wood for making kites. The fridge was held closed by a 2x4 angled against the handle. I could go on, but I did not gain much more woodworking experience than that up until the kit arrived. I bought some useful jigs from Ken, a few recommended hand tools, Craiglisted to get a band saw and drill press, and fixed up a corner of the barn so I could control humidity around the existing work bench.

I am amazed I could build the darn thing. And now I'm waiting for my second kit, another 00-14 with some great redwood for the top!

Thanks, Ken. mmmm, small body, long scale, wide neck - sounds like my sorta git.

Dave, we really do need some pics now. And you might want to put on your calender driving up to Tacoma next June for the GAL conference - many of the great builders from Eugene, Porland and the Sea area will be there.

And for what it is worth, I started building five years ago at 60 and am thinking about my 7th (and 8th and 9th...). Build in my garage, add a few tools each time - all I can say is that you're doomed LOL

Someone asked about the sound. The first thing is, it's LOUD. Also 'woody'. I play a lot in open D - DADF#AD - and it handles that tuning well; in fact I did the setup especially for that and other dropped tuning.
It is a very sweet sounding guitar, and following Ken Cierp's instructions for setup it plays well up and down the neck. I will often capo on the fourth fret and when I do on this guitar the trebles just ring and ring.
In a word, I like it. Now if I did not do something really stupid during construction and it holds together, it should get even better with age. :-)

I've made a short clip of the sound. Now if I can figure out how to post it.

@deadedith: you'll have to upload your soundfile somewhere else, and link to it in this forum.
