J-185 side profiles

I just finished building my first kit, a Stew-Mac dreadnaught. While it is nowhere near a pretty as some I have seen on this forum, it is the best sounding guitar I own.

Anyway, this gave me the confidence to order an unserviced kit from LMI and Scott Antes plans for the J-185 small jumbo. The plans are great, but they don't give a pattern for cutting the sides. "Aha!" I said, "I will just order the Stew-Mac Small Jumbo plans, which DO have a side pattern". Unfortunately, that guitar body is shorter and has a different waist than the other small jumbo.

Does anyone know where I can get a side profile pattern; or how I can extract one from the Scott Antes J-185 plan?

Thanks,
Dan

I think most guitars begin to taper towards the neck maybe 6" from the heel graft, which works out to 12" from the end of the side. Find the point the guitar begins to taper, and then (figuratively) draw a line straight to the edge of the bout. Measure the length of the curve from that point back to the center of the endgraft. Thats how I did it. I Then gently curved it down to the neck block height you desire or require. Leave a little for adjustment when sanding the rim, especially near the waist area...which should actually be a little taller than the bouts.

The rim profile of a guitar is fairly complex ---- that's why you don't see or get them on the drawings. If you search this forum you will find a method to produce an approximation, but those still will require a bit of refinement with a contoured abrasive bar. Thanks to Ken Casper this is the method we now use to generate our production side templates.

Dan -- if you have the Scott Antes plan, there is another way to achieve the correct side profile. I have used it with the Antes plan for the OM. It has a similar method to Ken's and Ken's :-) , but does not require the apparatus.

Click here to see the page describing it.

One of these methods will either work for you or help you arrive at your own procedure.

Dan, I built a small jumbo from the OLF SJ plans last winter. I believe those are the plans Stewmac is selling. Pretty good drawings that build into a nice guitar, but the side profile isn't entirely accurate.

I am now building a J-185 using a top template I got from Ken Cierp. I came up with the approach noted above by Ken Cierp while trying to get an accurate rim profile for that guitar. This approach works extremely well, but of course requires you have Ken Cierp's radius bar, mold, and a template for your Antes J-185.

I love the shape of these Gibson style jumbos and glad to see more people building them! Good luck with yours!

Ken

Thank you guys for all the replies. I ran into both Ken's and Bill's methods shortly after my second post. I should have made a more thorough search first. The fact that you guys didn't just flame me for asking the question speaks volumes about how helpful you all are.

The kit arrived last weekend. It was in great shape, but the sides were not quite right. I contacted LMI about it and they said to send the sides back along with my mold (at their expense); and they would personally make sure the sides fit my mold. Talk about handling a problem! I can say that LMI is great to deal with.

Glad LMI took care of you, but too bad you have to wait for another set of sides to show up. What wood are you using for the back and sides?

Sorry for the delayed reply. I sometimes have trouble logging in.

The back and sides are un-figured black acacia. It is very similar in appearance to riftsawn mahogany. The top is AAA red spruce. I don't expect to get the sides back until mid-January, but I will post some pictures of the build as I go along.
