Being the stupid kid that I am, I decided to break my collar bone yet again this year while snowboarding yesterday therefore I'm unable to do any kind of luthiery work for quite a while, and all of my guitar projects are now on hold.

Hopefully it won't be near as bad as the first time and I'll be back relatively soon. Although because I've already got a plate on the bone from the last time, there's potential for it to be worse. I'll find out today when I get x rays and I'll get an ETA on recovery. Not to excited about the fact that I won't be able to touch any of my guitars.

Well that's that,

Dan

I've heard that snowboarders (like cyclists) have a high rate of collar bone and shoulder injuries. Thats why I telemark - you can still build guitars with a torn ACL.

Hope you do heal quickly.

Dan,
So sorry about your injury. I hear statistically guitar making is less dangerous than snow boarding....I think the "They Brothers" did the study...(They say!!!!) :>)
(some humor to help the pain) I personally don't do anything dangerous anymore!! Too old.
I hope you can get back to it soon....axe building that is.

Well the first break was on bicycles, and I droped bmx after thatt. This was the first time snowboarding which was suppose to kind of be an alternative type thing but i guess that didnt work out to well. forgive that typing, one handed typing is never good haha.

Keep the forum busy so I at least have something to look at! :)

Dan, uuuhh let's see..."Guitar Building" -0- injuries ...
"Snowboarding" broken collar bone....
"Guitar building"...-0- injuries...
"BMX"...broken collar bone..
"Guitar Building"...-0- injuries....

I'm seeing a trend here...chances are pretty slim it's going to change...I think I'd stick with the "Guitar Building!"
I KNOW...it hurts to laugh...A Happy and early recovery...:)

Haha, Ray... Good stuff.

The ironic part is, I had a basically scratch kit picked out from Kevin Murray (rivdriftr on ebay) for 195 bucks that I was about to order. Instead I I bought a pass to snowboard and put he kit off.

If I would have gotten the wood, I wouldn't be broken right now, lol. Funny how that all works.

Yes, but you'd have missed the perfect opportunity to learn how not to snowboard ;)

Dan, heal quickly and enjoy life. Don't let the occasional injury stop you from having fun.

Ray, you can get injured doing guitar building. A broken collarbone is highly unlikely, but if you lose focus while working with sharp and or power tools you can get hurt. So although Dan has no guitar building injuries, I took off part of a finger with a bandsaw over the summer. It was almost 3 months before I could finger a steel string. Luckily I had the classical that I built a few years back.

I know that's very true Lance, my comments were meant in jest...:) actually you can get hurt doing just about anything...
sorry for YOUR injury...I had a friend who was a wonderful violinist who took off the tips of the fingers of his left hand with a bandsaw...he quit playing because he had "Perfect Pitch" hearing and could never make a proper note after that...it was either flat or sharp..and he couldn't stand the imperfect tone..
Hope you heal well and play often!

Reguardless of the right broken clavical, I managed to play for 3 hours with my buddy today at the local cafe here. Plus I bought a 50 dollar Rogue mandolin that came today that I absolutely love. Kind of a trial run to learn/see if I wanted a mandolin before I built one.

So far it looks like this time around the broken collar bone won't be all that bad (well in comparison to last time). I guess I'll find out for sure when I see tomorrow if I have to have surgury again or not.

Thanks for the jokes and input.

Sorry to hear it Dan. Iíve broken both of my clavicles while skiing. The last one was accompanied by a separated shoulder and required surgery. No fun. Hope you heal quickly.

Good luck both of you guys on your surgeries and your test results. I have a shoulder that needs care right now, but having gone through it with a full-tear rotator cuff surgery a few years ago, I'm weighing which is worse -- living with the injury or gong thru the surgery and rehab.

Dan, I'm new here, just poking around to see what's going on in the KGF. I'm truly sorry to read about your injury, and hope you're well on the way to recovery following your surgery. The best way to avoid injury is to live your life in a padded cell, never doing anything, but I don't know anyone who would choose that! I'm glad you've kept your sense of humor about it, though. It will come in handy as you recover. It probably wasn't intentional, but I laughed right out loud when I read John Hall's advice four posts above: "Enjoy the break..." On second thought, that sounds like great advice to me!

Hope you have a speedy recovery Dan. Hopefully I can get my pics up so you have something to look at. There is no finish on my guitar until the spring, but at least its another new project for you to see.

Happy Holidays everyone!
