Okay, this is no new idea, and I know somewhere back there in the old threads someone has shown this before. Bill shows how to make one in his first book.
Well I bought the parts to make the vise before I made my first guitar, but never built the vise. I decided I needed a way to hold the current build while I cut for and install the end wedge, so I got out the parts and built the vise tonight. It sure works grand! I take no credit, but thought some of you newbies might be interested. Cost me about $10 to make. The wood I already had so that was free. It bolts to my "portable" workbench and can be taken down in a hurry.
Here are a few pictures. I apologize they are a little blurry. It was a low light situation.

Try Sylvan Wells' site; this was his invention. I obtained his permisison before publishing the photos.

Here's the link for this particular tool.

Everyone who uses it loves it.

This is to cool. I am in the process of equipping my shop and this will save some bucks. I'll need it after I install the central air and buy the de-humidifier that I am going to need if I want to build guitars in Florida. Thanks to Ken Cierp I just finished building a great vacuum clamping press and saved a bundle on that. Thanks for all the great tips to all the forum members who write in. You don't have to break the bank to get into this great business(in my case, hobby).

I have done the same thing, and it is very handy! I should take mine down when I don't use it, though, I can't tell you how many times of whanged my hip on it!

Shoulda mentioned: I lined mine with 1/4" thick cork tiles, and then used foam pipe insulation tubes on the clamp bar.

Kevin,

Clever! I like the variation for those of us with "portable" or limited space workbenches. I wanted to build one before I started my next guitar and needed that one idea to make it a reality. Thanks for sharing.

Just thought of a question: How long are the pieces of threaded pipe?

Fred - I used ten-inch pipe on mine. The black pipe worked best for some reason. I have sets of flanges mounted in three places around my shop so I can use the device at any of them depending on my needs. I also used pipe insulation to protect the guitar, but I prefer thin foam to protect the back and top, with a clean blue paper shop towel over it.

Thanks Bill,

Various locations, variation in mounting; I guess it's time I get busy on mine.

I used 12" pipe. The 10" is probably better, won't stick out as much.
One draw back on the use of the foam I notice that wood chips, sawdust seem to stick to it, I would think the cork might be better here, but I do like the foam for its soft contact and ability to conform a bit more to the guitar shape. Make sure there is nothing on the surface that can dent the soft spruce top!!
Note: I also spaced the pipes so that the upper bout fits down inbetween them, this way the pipe holds the guitar steady too. Looks like Ken did the same thing.

Kevin -- you are right about wood chips sticking to the foam; I brush them off by hand, but that's why I drape a couple of sheets of blue paper shop towel over it. I haven't had a problem with it up to this point. Also, I was thinking that the foam, if it did have a wood chip or other hard object stuck in it, would give easier than cork. On the other hand, the cork is easier to keep clean and smooth. Dif'rent strokes ...

I found the page I was looking for earlier:

I cut off a 6" x 24" section off one end of my antifatique mats. Then I cut in in half and glued one half to each vise face. The chips fall off easilly and their is still enough give so that I can't crush the guitar. I just throw towels over the pipes.

Lance.
