First, what is the proper name for this sticker. Second, I have seen kits with custom stickers. Where do you find them?

Matt -- I call it a "label." People make their own ... use the computer and your printer. Glue them using any glue that works on wood -- a little bit will do it.

I have just placed my first label in my first guitar. It is rectangular 3 5/8 wide , 2 1/2 high.

It states Custom made by

Norman R. Paddock (in script)

Summer 2008

#____________

and for future history I included;

Materials from Luthiers Mercantile, Inc. Built using
Herman Hauser's 1937 Segovia Classical guitar plans.
Back and sides Indian Rosewood, top Englemann Spruce,
Neck Mahogany, fretboard ebony

It really looks nice.

Norman,
I have started to design a label for my guitar. I may not put anything on the headstock with this first one since it is a kit.
Do you have a picture of your label you can post. I'd enjoy seeing what you came up with.
Thanks.

Kevin: I can't photo the label, but here is is what it looks like. Print this and put a black border around it 1/4" in from the edges. I also did it on buff paper.

My name I did in Segoe Script. The rest in Times New Roman.

Hope this helps.

Any good rag resume paper would make a good durable label. One thing I did for mine was spray both sides with acrylic, 2 coats. It helps protect the paper and ink a little better from dirt, but also prevents the ink from bleeding if the glue soaks into the paper.

Ken: The spray is a good idea. I had planned to shellac mine during the finishing. Laying stupid aside, how did you do a jpeg of your label? Did you just do a close up with the digital camewra?

Actually, I built it in Word, then hit Print Screen, and cropped the image to the size you see. It is not actually a photo of the label. I have a couple, but in the website, they are too small to see. The software I originally designed the site in had no provisions for hotlinking the photos to see enlarged versions.

I just got a new version of Microsoft Expressions Web which seems really cool, does all sorts of standard web editing, but allows you to mix elements of different styles, like blogs, pHpNuke, and several other languages, none of which I know but like the results, all in one web page. Needless to say, I am rebuilding my site with a new look, same information, but you will be able to enlarge the photos. In the interim, I just posted the above photo to my blog. It will be a good month before the site is really ready and uploaded again.

Forgot a step: After hitting print screen, open MS Paint, and just hit paste....the screen image shows up, then I cropped it to the label borders, or close enough.

My wife is a scrapbooker and she said you could get some scrapbooking paper that will fit in the printer for all types of colors and paterns. I'm thinking of a vintage looking type paper...

I like the look of that paper! I was thinking of something like it myself, but had some heavy rag paper we used on some invitations, has lots of visible fibers and such, that has worked well. Can't wait to see how yours turns out Matt.

If you go to Staples or Office Max you can purhcase various designs of business cards on perf paper. You can use these to print your label info on. You can also print matching business cards if you need them.

Here is a mock up label I made for Hana Lima Ia Ukuleles. The label was done in Adobe Illustrator and printed on an ink jet printer.

Don I really like the Ukelele label you designed. Did it ever get used? I want something unique but I'm just not creative. Have you done labels for others?

I really like it too! I am in the middle of redesigning my labels, now that I have a new logo:

Though I am sure it will look better over black as it does on the website. I actually created a mask of the image, reversed it so the image was transparent, and then placed the mask over an image of black pearl for inlays. I have a different version I used on my "business cards" that is also very simple, but very cool....probably what will go on my labels.

Hi All,

Some good work here. I made my labels the same way on the computer. I just used some elementary school stick glue on the back of the label, positioned and laid it down. Still have my first guitar, built in 1995. Stays in the case, paper hasn't yellowed or come loose, looks good as the day I made it. I know some guys like to coat them before glueing in.

Hi Brent,
I design logos among other graphic arts. Yes I have done them for others.
The above label was never intended for use but as a design idea for others to choose a particular look.
Looks good Ken!

That gives me an idea Matthew,
I have done logos and other artwork for surfboards that I print on rice paper. I attach the rice paper with spray adhesive around the edges) to a regular sheet of ink jet paper and run it through my printer. Then it gets glassed on the foam board. It seems you could print your design on the rice paper and then shellac it into place on the back strip. You would have to test it on scrap to make sure the ink jet ink doesn't bleed. But if it works that would be an easy but elegant way to make it permanent...

or you could use a rubber stamp! Lol!
