Several luthiers around here are using this for cutting fret ends. It's a Japanese lead nippers, by Fan Out, for stained glass work. I'm told that these are good for SS frets, but I'll remain blissfully ignorant of that, for now.

I tried to get a closeup of the extremely clean fret end, but no such luck.

Those look like basic wire cutters, and i've seen comments from people saying that's a no-no.
And since i'm getting ready to do my first fret job any week now, i'd love to see what other people have to say about this.

Tuneful,

They are not basic wire cutters. Basic wire cutters have a double bevel and cannot be used to flush cut frets, or anything else.

Much like the fret cutters you see being sold by stew mac and LMII, these cutters have a single bevel and are flush on the back side, allowing a very close and straight/flush cut.

I haven't used this specific tool, but I don't have any reason to believe they wouldn't work just fine for trimming frets, and if they are hardened they should even suffice to cut stainless steel. Wear would be the concern there.

Oh, ok. That makes sense.
I've got about a half dozen pairs of cutters laying around in various tool boxes. It will be interesting to see if I have any like that.

These can be found at shops that sell supplies for making stained glass windows. Check your phone directory for "stained glass".

Or simply buy a set of ordinary cutters and file away the outer bevel. The same can be done with carpenters pincers or any other twin bevelled cutting tool.

The Fan Out pliers, aren't ordinary cutters.

I wonder about making something from "normal" diagonal cutters, and casehardening them, after the grinding/filing.

You'll very probably find they are just the same apart from their single bevel and spring loading. Cutters are typically hardened and tempered to somewhere between 50-60rockwell, but cheaper versions often come in at a lower hardness rating and this tends to result in poorer edge retention qualities.

Filing the outer bevel seldom heats a blade to a point of reducing it's hardness, but grinding can if you don't quench during the process.

The best means by which you can harden an edge is via heating and quenching, then tempering. Case hardening tends to harden the exterior, but can result in shorter edge life as you'll tend to find a need to repeat the process every few sharpenings.

I bought one of these, which was about half the price of the ones from LMI or SM.

They are ground very flat, so you leave very little to be filed down, and they cut great.

"The End Nip Trimmer can be used in a variety of different applications, including trimming the edge of edgebanding, veneers and soft metals. "
