new Delta drum sander - opinions?

I am in the process of talking myself into buying a drum sander. Been looking at the Grizzly and Performax, but just came across a Delta 31-260X. It's $999 everywhere but has a $50 rebate till the end of the month and free shipping from Tool Zone on ebay express.

Opinions on this drum sander? Also, anyone use this ebay seller?

Also, dust collection in my shop would be a big deal, and I see this new model supposedly has a improved collection system. I know drum sanders produce prodigous amounts of sawdust, so even with dust collection, am I still looking at wearing a dust mask, etc?

The Grizzly drum sanders of this size are all 220v, this is 110 so you won't need special wiring. But normally in this type of machine the wiring can be converted if you want. Check your manual when you get the machine. I have a few Delta machines, and I have had no problems with any of them. I recently purchased a Perfomax 10-20 for sanding tops, backs, sides and fretboard blanks. I like it because it fit well in my shop, but as some of the reviews I read mention it is touchy if you try to remove too much material at once.

I would say as long as you have a dust collector, you probably won't need a mask. The dust is so fine from these types of sanders that a dust collector performs really well. I had no problems with my Performax hooked to a Delta dust collector.

As for The Tool Zone, they are an on-line seller outside of ebay as well. I have been to their sight many times over the last 5 - 7 years. I don't remember ever buying from them, but they have been around.

Enjoy.
Lance.

One of the most important features of a drum sander is that the TABLE is stationary and the adjustments are made by the actual elevation of the drum. Both our wide sanders work this way. One of them is a Performax which are priced about the same as the Deltas. To me having the table constantly at different heights is a pain. Also, with the table at a fixed height it is very easy to make you own "in and out" feed extensions.

I see your point about the table at varying heights, but I would think that would be an issue with longer stock than we're working with. But seeing as I've never used one... I'll take your word on that :-)

How about the Performax 10/20? The fact that you have to turn the stock around and make 2 passes makes me nervous though.

We use a 10/20 for bracing stock and a few other things like sanding down rosettes flush --- very nice for very light sanding. But if quick work is your goal, the 16/32 or 18/36 would be a better choice. Its a power issue, the 10/20 kicks the overload circuit breaker very easily.

Ahh.. good points Ken. Ok then, I think the Performax 16/32 might have moved to the top of the list. Thanks for the feedback.

If you have the room for the 16/32, I would go with that. You will find other uses for it besides the tops, backs and sides. As for the 10/20 overloading, mine tripped less the second time I used it, and the last time it never tripped the overload. I think it's just adjusting to how much to sand with each pass.

I like the 10/20, and did not have room for anything larger so it was my only option.

I think that was my point Lance -- with my larger sanders I can easily take nearly 1/16 each pass -- the 10/20 can't do that without tripping. I read some where that guy/gals are by passing the breaker -- I would not recommend it however, a couple of my machine are over ten years old and don't have overloads and I never had a problem.

I have a 31-255X drum sander and am very happy with it. Depending on the wood, feed speed and grit it will remove 1/16" per pass. I don't go that heavy however as it does put a bit of a load on it. I have only tripped the feed motor overload 2 times that was when I accidentally messed up the table height and tried to take too big a pass causing the table to stall. I have never had it trip while in use even if the machine is getting bogged down a bit. The only issue I have had with it is feed belt tracking which seems to be a common problem with these machines. Not a big deal but annoying.

Dust collection is a necessity with these machines. If you don't have proper dust collection, they won't operate properly and you will have a huge mess very quickly. I can run mine and no dust comes out so no mask is needed.

Oh yeah - dust collection -- the 10/20 needs about 850 cfm with a 4" hose, a vacuum cleaner (I tried a 6hp craftsman) just does not get it done. I picked up a few of the 1 hp Delta collectors (Amazon tools $137 free shipping) and they are very effective but noisey.
