Question about Fret Saws

I have a Lie-Nielson rip carcass saw. It has a 0.020" blade with a 0.026" kerf and is 15ppi. Do you think this saw will be alright for cutting the fret slots? Looking at Stew-Mac's web site they recommend 0.023" kerf for their fret wire but I'm wondering if the difference of 0.003 is something to be concerned about or not. What do you think? What kind of saw do you use for cutting the fret slots?

What's a rip carcass saw? Yes -- .003" will make a difference especially with ebony. You may be able to find fret wire with a smaller tang.

I should mention that the main problem is not that the frets will have to be forced into the slots ---- but rather, the finger board bow that will result from the wedging action is the issue.

Thanks Ken for the reply. A rip carcass saw is in this case the following saw made by Lie-Nielsen.

http://www.lie-nielsen.com/catalog.php?sku=CS

The one shown is a cross-cut. I have the rip saw version. I know rip saws should not replace cross cut saws for the fineness of the cut but I also figured that it would not make much difference as the fret wire goes in the cut groove. Perhaps I should look at getting a proper fret saw. The bowing that you mention does that occur end-to-end on the fingerboard?

The bowing occurs lengthwise, as mater of fact the action is so powerful replacing frets with ones that have oversize tangs is a common repair method we use for necks that have severe forward bows. That repair method tends to take some of the stress off the truss rod and can actually straighten out the neck.

Since the Lie-Nielsen kerf is 0.003" WIDER than the recommended kerf of 0.023" there would be LESS backbow and the frets would fit looser. You would need a bigger tang to fit as designed. While there are tools to make the fretwire fit a larger than designed slot, maybe best to just get the correct sized tool in the first place.

On the other hand, you might try some test slots and see if pressing and gluing in frets might work in this case.

Stew-Mac also makes a set of tools for shaving off the fret tang to fit tight slots and making the tang "thicker" for fitting loose slots. One of those tools, in conjunction with your current saw, should get the job done.

Thanks for all the replys. I ended up ordering a fret saw from Stew-Mac. I got the gentelemen's saw that comes with the fretboard miter box.

You are correct Steve I did not read past the .020 blade.

Bottom line it is best to have the saw that matches the fret wire used.

No prob. Ken.

Check out this nice tutorial regarding glued in frets.

I've seen that entire tutorial before. It has always struck me that the guy does things his own way. Gluing frets in with epoxy glue either seems to me that he doesn't expect the guitar to last long enough or be played enough to need a refret. How easy is it to remove epoxied frets? I wouldn't think it's very easy.

Bill, he explains that with heat (soldering iron pressed to the fret) that the frets simply slip out without damaging the fretboard at all. Any remaining epoxy in the fret slot is removed with a dremel/bit of the correct size. It seems nearly foolproof! I haven't tried it, but I am doing a bound neck next on an archtop, so I might go for it.

Okay -- thanks Steve -- I didn't realize that epoxy would release that easily.
