Howdy Folks,

Well I finally finished my first Guitar: The Ellipse.............

Cutaway Jumbo 14 fret
Sitka High Figure Bear Claw Spruce Top from unserviced LMI tonewood
East Indian Rosewood Back and Sides
Mahogany Neck (EIR peghead)
Holey Braces
Tilted Elliptical Soundport
Ebony Fingerboard
Herringbone Purfling & Rossette
MOP Inlay

Finish: Nitro-Lacquer Back, Sides and Neck
French Polish Top

Kit Source: Martin (except Top)

Number of iterations on nuts, saddle & action so far: 3. I think maybe 2 more are needed.

Thanks to all who frequent this forum, especially Bill Cory. I could not have done it without ya'll. The help was inmeasureable.

Here are some pics and at the bottom is a video where you can HEAR THE ELLIPSE!!!!

If you click on a Photo it will take you to webshots where you can see the whole build from conception to completion.

Hear this guitar: Note I played the chunk rhythm into the computer, then played it back while I recorded the lead, all through a web camera mic.

John - - Congrats! -- Too bad the images aren't showing --- I went to the "Control Panel" to see if I could edit them to make them show up, and they show there with the Question Mark just like on my screen -- the text code doesn't show there either.

It's probably necessary just to post photos, and if there's a link to go to, to put that link in. Webshots' link appears to be too complex for this forum program to parse ...

How about posting the link for your webshots page and we can go see it? I really want to ---

Bill

Brilliant. Sorry, I thought you said that was your first... No one would dare try all the alterations you've tried on their first... they all look great. Seriously beautiful.

Great job, (seems that you really mastered the dreaded pore filling - your finish is beautiful) and it sounds great too!

Well @#$@#! -- it doesn't work for me on my Mac in Safari, Firefox, Navigator or Explorer ... first time they've ALL ever been foiled ... usually it's a server problem when this happens since they all say they cannot locate the server "good-times.webshots.com" etc.

Can you post the regular address so I can go see it?

Thanks
Bill

This is my first guitar Ted, and believe me there are some mistakes.

Hi John -- That link worked -- and (strangely) this morning, all thephotos show up and the links work in the same browser (safari) that wasn't working before. These computers are almost as unpredictable as guitar kits!

Anyway -- Beautiful job! Great pictures and a really marvelous job of customizing that Martin kit -- looking back on when you first started asking questions about whether this could be done, where to find the resources, etc., it's an amazing thing that you're now holding and playing the actual guitar you envisioned. You must be really proud and should be. The thing has a great tone, too! Isn't that the icing on the cake -- looks good and sounds good.

I'm like the other guys -- it sure doesn't look like a first guitar build! Just a great job all around.

Oh Hos, she's gorgeous! Well done! I can't get enough of the shape ofthe jumbo. I play dreds all the time, and keep coming back to the comfot of a jumbo, which was my first build. I love how the OM sits on you and plays from any position, but keep coming back to the over all benefits of the jumbo. I just need to build a cutaway, just not sure I have the guts to go non-circular on the sound hole. Well done.

Thanks Guys,

You don't know how long I have waited to be able to post the completion....on 2nd thought...you prob. do.

anyway, it is such a joy to play. I find myself tinkering around in frets I usually do not play, just to see what it sounds like.

To describe the sound I came up with one comparison. You know how when you pluck the strings over the hole on a normal guitar, it sounds deeper, as opposed to plucking the string near the saddle, which gives that Johnny Cash Flavor. If you pluck the string over the 12th fret it has even a deeper tone than over the hole. try it.

Basically this guitar has that function moved a little towards the bridge.
It has a very deep bass, but seems to have color in the midrange unlike some dreadnoughts. of course all of these terms are subjective, so it is impossible to convey over email. What I have learned is that you have to play it a little differently, atleast from my martin D18. I am not sure if this is a godd thing or a bad thing.

Now I am stuck on what to do next. baby is due anyday now, so the next one will be awhile. I am thinking a Willie Nelson style classical complete with extra hole, elliptical is shape of course!

Go for it Hos....I have 3 kids under 5, and building has been my only sanity. That, and I started boxing a year ago, really just hittin and kickin a bag, but it keeps you centered. Order the kit, let it sit for a month as you get used to the new little one, and spend a small, structured amount of time on it every day, or as often as you can anyway. Good luck with the new baby!

Hi Guys, I could not resist:

I present my (our) latest creation:

Stella James Hostetler: 7 lb1 10z 20 inches (51 cm) all systems go! B-day May 21st 2008

My wife had wanted this name for atleast a decade(if we had a girl) and I never quite warmed up to it until about week ago.

I always surveyed songs for a girls name, seems fitting right?

Stella Blue by the Dead was one of my favorites, I've seen Jerry finesse this one many times.

Then I read the "complete annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics" tonight and thought of you guys. It turns out the song is about a guitar, or atleast, a form of music associated with the manufacturer. I used to own a Stella guitar in college. (boy I wish I had it now) The entry in the book comes complete with a drawing of a Stella Guitar Peghead.

It reads:

Stella is latin for "Star"

The stella brand guitar was " particularly popular among blues players during the 1920's and 1930's" Leadbelly played a Stella 12 string, while Blind Blake and Blind Willie Mctell (Dylan homage tune) also played Stellas. Great sounding Cheap (about $15) , manufactured by Oscar Schmidt in Jersey City, NJ.

Other entries: "The song has a strong connection to guitars and guitar players"

"dust of those rusty strings just one more time" indicates a steel string guitar. History has pretty much forgotten how important the advent of the steel string guitar was to the development of popular music. Before the turn of the century, the guitar was a polite parlor instrument strung with gut. And even in th early decades of this century, the guitar was nothing , as far as popularity, compared to the banjo and mandlin (which were steel string instruments)."

it was the blues men of the 20's that started experimenting with the steel string. hence Stella Blue.

great name "Stella", great nickname "Blue".
By george I think my wife has found a suitable name indeed! I love it.

Stella

"It seems like all this life is just a dream"

just poked around and found this at my local Target.

Crazy, this is like the width of the railroad tracks being link to the width of the chariott wheels, being linked to the average's width of a horse's a**.

Still 30 bucks!! That is how much I payed in 1988, but the guitar I bought was a better version, and used.
