OK Lets say you have a small shop....... and I do mean small. If you where to buy one piece of equipment ( has to be bench top... there's no more room). Which one would it be?

1. Drillpress 10 In./12 In.
2. Band Saw 10 in./12 in,
3. Table Saw 10 in.
3. Sander (let's say 4" band and 6" disk

Or forget it and do it all by hand. I'm getting close to pulling the trigger and I need some support.

Thanks guys,

Woody

If you could only have one of these, I would probably spring for the bandsaw. Is the "one item" limit due only to the size of your shop? If so, you might consider some creative cabinet work. I built a small free standing cabinet that I use for my bench top power tools. It has shelves inside that hold the tools I'm not using. The tool in use sits on top. The whole thing is on casters so I can move it around the shop. This one cabinet holds a Delta table top bandsaw, a Craftsman table top drill press, a Dremel jigsaw, and a Makita cordless drill set.

If there is any interest I'll go shoot some pictures and take some measurements. It's nothing but a 1/2" plywood box on wheels, with a couple of shelves.

I also had space considerations in my shop/corner of condo basement where I work. I did quite a bit of the stuff by hand, but finally sprung for a ryobi 10" bandsaw. stores under my workbench when not in use. It makes lots of jobs soooo much easier. Oh. I working with an unserviced LMI kit, so I had to cut braces. That was the big reason for the saw, but I've used it for much more.

If you go with the ryobi, find a good blade for it. Don't even try the stock one. I spent two nights adjusting and couldn't get it to cut close to straight. Bought a timberwolf blade for it, and it cuts better than my dad's big bandsaw. Just my 2 cents

Bandsaw. If you are going to be doing necks from raw stock, I would consider getting a small jointer planer as well, mine is Grizzly's 4", and it takes up very little room and does a great job.

Ditto on the band saw. For guitar building, a bandsaw can do almost everything a table saw can do, a hand drill will suffice for a drill press, and a bit of sandpaper on a block and some sweat will cover the sander. That said, I have all of the above and every one gets used quite frequently.

Well... I'm going to go against the grain a little here. :) I'm faced with a similar situation and I've decided to get a Grizzly bench top drill press. I'm adding a Wagner Saf-T planer for thicknessing and a Luthier's Friend with some Robo sanders for milling. This makes the drill press a three in one tool.

Good deal. I think you will like the robo sander. I actually have a Harbor Freight Oscillating spindle sander that works very very well, and find myself using it for all sorts of things that the robosander will be uselful for.....shaping braces, sanding necks, especially as you get to where the headstock flares out, shaping nuts and saddles (grinding away the beginnings, anyway), and a multitude of other small tasks that it works great for.

Jim Howell -- be sure your Wagner Sat-T-Planer will work okay with your small drillpress. the planer works fine on it, but I learned the hard way that I cannot use my Saf-T-Planer with my small drillpress because there is not enough clearance between the stage and the column to reliably plane anything wider than about six inches.

woody, Do you do craigslist? You should go to www.craigslist.com and then go to your city and click on "tools". You can usually find a used drill press, band saw, and table saw for dirt cheap. I have seen at least 5-6 drill presses for under $60 in the last 3-4 months. Table saws also under that price. I would give that a try. You may be able to get a few things on your list!!

A differnt question since i know little about saws, could a scroll saw be used instead of a band saw? I know the band saws are nice and more $$$ but do they serve the same purpose?

For an instrument maker in my opinion a band saw is a must --- however, try and figure a way to fit a 14" Grizzy. You will be able to do some serious woodworking and will not be sorry a year from now when you see a nice chunk of wood that could be resawn into guitar parts.

A scroll saw is nothing like a bandsaw, they are designed for very inticate work in relatively thin material. The one in our shop has about an inch of dust on the table!

Wow!!!
I'm really surprised.... I assumed a band saw would be more for scratch builders, but not for Kits. I really thought most people would want a drill press like Jhowell mostly for sanding and drilling.

There was a major thread on the OLF a while back about band saws and tables saws. Alot of the big time luthiers stuck with table saws. Not enough room for now for me.
I have been looking at some fine tooth PULL SAWS, and I think they can suffice for braces, for now anyway.

I saw a portable drill press at the Rockler site but I don't think you can do enough with it so.... I probably will go with a drill press, mainly because I just can't see the need. Hey Bill in your book you only mention a drill press, nut you are certainly entitled to change your opinion.
Thanks for all your opinions, I's nice to get some different views
