Orang peel in Stewmac Colortone Finish

Some body stop me!! I am just before stripping and starting over on this finish. This is my second finish job, the first one turned out beautifully but with a blue haze, a victim of coats that were applied to thickly. so this time I tried to keep each coat very thin, maybe too thin and not enough coats. I filled with colortone filler, sprayed 12 coats waterbased sanding sealer and 8 coats lacquer topcoat. After applying topcoat, waiting 2 weeks then sanding with 800 dry, 800 wet, 1200 wet, 2000 wet. It looked great and ready for buffing with meguiars polish. Only after buffing did the orange peel show up. When buffed it gets glossy but it appears that the orange peel is embedded in the finish and does not take the glossy look of the surrounding lacquer. The only thing I can think that might have caused it is that the sanding sealer may not have been sanded flat enough. I guess I was under the impression that the top coat would melt/burn into and flatten the orange peel. Is there anything I can do to fix this apart from staring over?

Maybe I'm confused here, but when you sanded (leveled) the topcoat, did you sand until the ENTIRE surface was dull (i.e. no shiny spots showing)? Also did you do this between your top coats or just on the last coat? I was of the understanding that orange peel was a surface "imperfection" and the reason why we wet sand and buff out a top coat. So I can't understand how orange peel can be embedded in the topcoat finish. Maybe someone can correct me or explain that to me. Maybe the sealer like you said isn't sanded perfectly flat. But if you leveled the lacquer at some point during the finishing schedule you should still have a nice flat topcoat surface. One more thing, Not that this should have anything to do with getting rid of orange peel but I personally feel going from 800-1200-2000 is too large a jump between grits.

Cheers,
Chad

How much leveling did you do? Did you sand off all the filler pore except what was in the pores? Did you level the sanding sealer before you sprayed the top coats? Also how long did you wait betwen coats. More than 24 hours?

I did not level sand between top coats, only light scuff sanding. After the final top coat was applied I sanded it completely matte, no shiny spots. I think the sanding sealer is where the orange peel resides, and the topcoat covers it without affecting the way it looks.

I have gone back in spots and sanded with 800 dry and can get rid of most of the orange peel but I'm afraid I am almost to bare wood again. I can't decide whether to sand away all of the Orange peel and reapply finish or just strip-eze the entire guitar and reapply from the beginning or is there another option. I guess I am just wondering if there is any way to salvage the work I have already put in on this finish, or just cut my losses and start over.

Hey Ken, you posted while I was composing my previous answer , so in answer to your post:

Leveling was done after the 12 coats of sanding sealer, I admit I didn't completely sand away all the shiny spots, probably the cause of this problem. I sprayed 4 coats per day 3 hours apart. After spraying each time I brought the guitar in the house to 70 degrees and low humidity. It went 36 hours between sanding sealer coats 8 and 9, but I scuff sanded between those coats. The instructions say the window is 48 hours. I did sand away all the pore filler, in fact I don't think I had enough on the guitar because there are still some pores showing through the finish.

I think you are correct, sounds to me like your top coats did not "burn in" the shiney spots left in the sanding sealer. so it seems that you have to sand back down to and get off a few coats of the sanding sealer. I simply don't get the idea of all those sanding sealer coats anyway?? The product is made by Target and in their instruction set there is no call for all that sealer. More top coats would be the norm. Plus the sealer is softer than the tops. Anyway you have some sanding to do. Stripping is touchy if the binding and other trim are plastic.

Thanks Ken, It is interesting, I didn't realize that the Target instructions were different from Stew Mac's. I guess I'll get out the sander and get to work. No plastic on the guitar but I think I would rather salvage what I've got rather than start over.

I think Ken is right on with this. I have used Target USL (some colortone, some target) on all of my guitars and the only one I had finishing problems with was the one that I built up coats of sealer like the Colortone can says. I have used top coat for all of the build up coats and had no orange peal problems like I did with the sealer method. I also had big problems sanding through to bare wood with the high sealer buildup method.

I would stay away from stripper too. With an agressive grit you can get it sanded down to wood fairly easily to start over.
