HELLO IM JUST STARTING ON MY FIRST KIT GUITAR I HAVE BUILT 2 ELECTRIC GUITARS FROM THE SAGA COMPANY, A BANJO, A MANDOLIN BOTH FROM SAGA, AND A GRIZZLY UKULELE. i DECIDED THESE WEREN'T CHALLENGING ENOUGH SO I ORDERED THE MARTIN INDIAN ROSEWOOD KIT FROM MUSICIANS FRIEND. i ORDERED A MOLD FROM KENNETH MICHAEL GUITARS. CAN ANYONE GIVE ME ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT TOOLS TO BUY, AS I PLAN ON BUILDING MANY MORE GUITARS. I READ THE LIST OF TOOLS FROM THIS SITE AND I WANT THE BEST VALUE FOR MY MONEY SO ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREAT AND WHERE TO PURCHASE THEM WOULD ALSO BE HELPFUL
THANKS SO MUCH

Hey Myron, would you mind not using just capital letters? It's more difficult to read, etc ...

Thanks.

Bill

Hey Myron, welcome to the board. The best thing to do is if you are on a budget, just get the tools that you will definitely need to get started and then work your way up from there. As you probably have already figured out from reading through a lot of these threads is that this is not a quick project, so only get the tools that you are going to need for each step. To start I would get some good clamps. Lowe's has an assorted bag of spring clamps for around 10 bucks that will take care of your first steps of attaching the heel and neck block to the sides. Along with that get about 200 clothes pins. One of the most important things for you to get would be a hygrometer. Most good guitar shops have them for around 15 dollars. You already did the first thing right by getting a good mold from Ken. Help us out by letting us know how your tool supply is currently. I was able to do most of my build with the things I had on hand, but not everyone has a good assortment of tools at their disposal. Good luck and keep us updated.

Hi Myron and welcome! What Blaine wrote is good advice. I would add the suggestion that you download the instruction manual from Stewmac for either the 000 or Dreadnought. (they have the manuals free on their site) In the beginning of the manual they have a complete list of tools they suggest you will need to complete their kit. Some of the tools can be improvised using alternate methods and some of the tools can be purchased at other sources for significant savings.

One thing though, I just searched Musicians Friend website and can't find any kits. Can you post a link so we can see what you got and that might help us give you an idea of what you will need.

And Bill (The grand poobah of this site) already mentioned the all caps thing.... It really is hard to read and comes across as shouting.

Sorry about the all caps. I guess I wasn't paying attention. If you go to musicians friend here is the link http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Martin-Build-Your-Own-Guitar-Kit?sku=419020
It is the same kit that martin offers. I chose the Indian Rosewood. As far as the tools I already have. I just ordered 3 of the camless cam clamps from stewmac.com and i have about 10 of those Irwin clamps (the type with the trigger) I have the dremel 400 xr kit. I have quite a few clothespins left over from builing the banjo. That is about all I have except for the common staples of a woodworking shop (hammers, screwdrivers, chisels, router, drill press, tablesaw, hand planes etc.)I own quite a few books on guitar construction. My ultimate goal is to build a guitar with a sheet metal body, I work in a sheet metal shop so the material will be readily available when I am ready. Thanks so Much for your responses

Myron,

You'll find that a kit from Martin or Musician's Friend can be assembled very accurately using these instructions

http://www.kennethmichaelguitars.com/kitmanual.html

Just give me a call and I can walk you through the minor differences between the KMG and Martin Kits---- Please take the time to read the articles regarding neck set and rim contouring, especially the top edge of the rim. The instructions from Stew Mac will not work properly with the kit that you have, the designs are different.

Ken,
Thank you so much for all your help. I really appreciate it

I have another question for anyone that can help, How do I know what radius the back of the guitar has? I haven't received the kit yet (it is on backorder) but I want to be prepared before it gets here so I can order the proper dish also does nayone know where I can get a good go bar clamp system at a decent price. Thanks So Much

You really do not need a dish or a go bar deck to build that kit, Three 8" cam clamps are all you need. Go to the middle of this section to find out how to make a 15' radius caul using 3x5 cards --- I use this simple system in my vacuum clamping set up. Martin back radius is 15' 3" but 15' will work just fine.
