Ok all, I have been absent from actually posting for two reasons. 1) I am only ever able to read the forum when I am at work and we have firewalls that prevent us from logging on, but I can at least read all the posts, and B) I forgot my user name and password for the longest time, so when I actually got around to logging on, I forgot how.

Well after many correctable mistakes as well as well as some that couldn't be, I actually finished my first one. It is an Om/OOO single cutaway assembled from parts from Martin which I got from Steve Kovacik. Steve was awesome and quickly replaced my single cutaway side which had a runout crack that just could not be repaired with another one for free!

Details:
Sitka top
Maple back and sides
Waverly Tuners
Abalam Inlay on soundboard and headstock
Goldleaf celtic knot on headstock
Celtic soundhole port
K and K pure western mini pickup
herringbone purfling and backstrip
Black plastic binding
Ebony bridge pins with abalam dots
unbleached bone nut and saddle

Thank you all for your wonderful words of wisdom on the forum and all the inspiration for me to complete this new baby! Thank you Bill for starting this site for all of us.

All I can say is WOW! Beautiful job! I love all the inlay, and the soundport is great! How does it sound?

Thanks Ken, I know I am just a doting father, but it sounds amazing. I started off with some extra light Martin strings and found that it sounded a little too brite sounding, so after making sure that the bridge and the guitar could handle the tension, I moved up to some medium .012-.053 John Pearse strings and it sounds amazing. Great balance of bright and warmth. The intonation is dead on, after a huge mistake of measuring incorrectly from the middle of the 12th fret (I read that as the middle between the 11th and 12th fret fingering position instead of the middle of the 12th fret wire) and having to remove the bridge and reposition it. I only scalloped the Bass side of the bracing due to Maple already being a bright sounding wood and it has a great balance in sound. As soon as I can figure out how to post up a soundfile, I will let everyone hear it.

Blaine-- that certainly doesn't look like a "first guitar"! That's a marvelous job. Puts me to shame, for sure!

Good job.

Bill, David, Thank you very much for your kind words. Bill in no way does this one put you to shame. Thanks to you and your insight to set up a site dedicated to all of this, I was able to achieve what I did. I dont think that this would have been possible without this site. I still have a long way to go, but I am definitely satisfied with my first results.

David, Seeing your Deerhead inlays that you have done inspired me to do mine myself. Thank you.

If anyone knows of a way to imbed soundfiles into a thread, please let me know. Otherwise, Bill, I will be sending a sound clip to you to place on the mp3 pages.

You have to post your soundfile somewhere, and then provide a link to it. Most of the internet providers we all use provide us with the opportunity to have a personal web page, and provide all the tools needed to build it without having to spend any money. Memory is cheap these days, and most will give you enough space to post hundreds of pictures and post a good number of MP3s. I have comcast, and they have great tools, though I have some web experience myself, so I don't use them. If you run out of space, most will also allow you 5 or more email addresses. If you haven't used all yours up with your family, start another email and another site, but that maight be a simple place to post your own soundfiles. That, or possibly a blog? I havent tried that on my blog yet, but I bet you could.

Blaine . . .

Wow . . . What a magnificent job. I don't guess I'll be showing any of mine . . . 'course I can't figure out how to post a picture anyway, even with the instructions from admin . . . oh well.

Where'd you get the cool label to stick inside? I've seen some other builds with pofessional looking labels and would like to do that myself.

Terry, I made my label using FIREWORKS by macromedia and then just printed out the final design using my home photo printer. I then attached it to the inside by using a light coat of elmers school glue spread evenly across the whole piece of paper.

As for your pics. I use a photobucket account which is free and once you upload the pictures, there is a link that you can copy and then paste directly into the thread without doing anything different. If you want, start a thread and attempt to post the link into the thread and I will take a look at it and see what I can do to help you.

Blaine--

Cool guitar! That's some impressive inlay for a first (or fifth or tenth) guitar. Beautiful job! You've made something to be very proud of!

Thanks Jim. It was definitely a test of patience to do the inlay. I used some of the thin sheets of abalom that were extremely difficult to cut since they would break so easily. I finally figured out that if I glued them down to a solid piece of backing with elmers washable glue, I could get the design I was wanting without breaking the piece. Once I did that it was smooth sailing.

On the labels I make on a home printer, I usually spray them both sides with clear acrylic to keep them from bleeding when glued....helpful hint. Also may help keep the integrity of the ink a little longer, not sure.

Blaine - this is my first post here - and I'm using it on a worthy guitar. It's gorgeous! I love the way it all ties together - the inlays, the soundport.

Really beautiful!

Thank you very much Crimson. I still love it to this day and am looking forward to building another one after I get some more free time. Two toddlers needing constant attention kind of puts a crimp in my plans. Thank you so much for the kind words.
